LAS VEGAS (AP) - The federal Bureau of Land Management is closing the only developed campground at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area for the summer.
A BLM statement says the Red Rock Campground will close Tuesday and reopen Aug. 29.
The site about 20 miles west of downtown Las Vegas usually closes during the summer due to low use.
It is located 2 miles east of the Red Rock visitor center off State Route 159.
Backcountry camping is allowed, with permits, in the more than 300-square-mile Red Rock Canyon area and on BLM public land outside the Las Vegas area for up to two weeks.
Popular primitive sites offering no facilities include the Bitter Spring and Gold Butte back country byways, Knob Hill, Virgin Mountains, Christmas Tree Pass and Logandale Trails.
