PHOENIX (AP) - A 38-year-old man died Sunday in a drowning north of Phoenix at Lake Pleasant.

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says Nelson Gomez Rivas of Phoenix went below the water’s surface as he tried to swim across a cove.

He is believed to either have become fatigued or distressed before he went under.

A nearby person pulled Rivas from the water and began CPR.

Rivas was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

It’s not yet known whether alcohol was a factor in the death.
