POMEROY, Ohio (AP) - Ohio’s attorney general wants help from the public in solving the fatal shooting of a man 22 years ago in southeastern Ohio.
Ronald Pohl, 57, was fatally shot in Meigs County on May 9, 1992. A search party found the Dayton man in Salem Township woods where he had been hunting turkey with one of his sons.
“They went into the woods together that morning, but separated to hunt, and that was the last time my brother saw him,” said Matthew Pohl in a statement released by the attorney general’s office.
Pohl’s son, Mike, was hunting some distance away when he heard a gunshot between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., followed by three to four more shots about 15 minutes later, authorities said. Investigators said the son called for help after he could not find his father.
Attorney General Mike DeWine is asking anyone with information about the fatal shooting to contact authorities.
Meigs County Sheriff Keith Wood, who was an Ohio Division of Wildlife officer at the time, was in the search party that found Ronald Pohl struck by buckshot in the back at close range.
“This is one of those cases that has haunted me through the years, but I still have hope that we will find out what happened,” Wood said in a statement.
Anyone with information on Pohl’s death should contact the Meigs County Sheriff’s Office or the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Tips also can be made through the attorney general’s website.
DeWine’s information request is part of his Ohio Unsolved Homicides Initiative developed in 2012 to bring widespread publicity to unsolved killings in the state. More than 1,800 unsolved homicides are listed in the initiative’s database.
