DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - In letters from jail, a central Florida man accused of killing his wife and her two children writes cryptically about sending three boxes to Texas and asks his mother-in-law for pictures of the missing family.
The State Attorney’s Office released Luis Toledo’s letters to The Daytona Beach News-Journal (https://bit.ly/1npmUwR), which had requested them.
The bodies of Yessenia Suarez and her children, Thalia and Michael Otto, have never been found. Toledo is being held at the Volusia County jail on charges of second-degree murder in the death of his wife and first-degree murder in the deaths of the children.
In a letter dated May 2 to a Deltona couple, Toledo wrote in Spanish that he sent three boxes to Laredo, Texas.
“I have a big surprise for the world. I have lots of friends that owe me favors. Between you and me, I sent three boxes to Laredo Texas. One large and two small. The large was already sent to Veracruz, Mexico and the two (others) are doing well. Now you know why I don’t care what they do with me because my things are well,” the letter states, translated from the Spanish.
In the same letter, Toledo wrote that he never hurt the children, but he was hurt that Suarez had been having a relationship with a co-worker.
Toledo also wrote Suarez’s mother, Felicita Perez, to ask her for pictures of Suarez and the children.
Perez wrote back on April 25, saying, “I don’t know how you have the nerve to ask me to send you pic. Tell me where are they and then I will send you all the pic you want.”
Assistant State Attorney Shannon Peters told the newspaper that prosecutors could not comment on Toledo’s writings. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office also declined comment to the newspaper.
Prosecutors say Toledo, a former member of the Latin Kings gang, killed his wife during an argument. He told deputies that someone else killed the children. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
Suarez and the children were reported missing Oct. 23, the day after a confrontation at her workplace.
