GALLUP, N.M. (AP) - Gov. Susana Martinez will honor fallen soldiers on Memorial Day in Gallup.
Martinez will participate in a remembrance ceremony Monday morning at the city’s Downtown Courthouse Plaza.
The governor plans to also discuss Gallup being chosen as the site of a new cemetery for local and regional veterans.
Martinez announced in April four cities that would be locations for proposed rural veterans’ cemeteries in New Mexico.
She signed a bill aimed at providing $600,000 to plan, design and construct the cemeteries.
A number of towns recently hosted community meetings on the need for small rural veterans’ cemeteries in the state.
According to the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs, more than half of New Mexico’s 170,000 veterans live too far from the state’s two existing national cemeteries.
