BENSALEM, Pa. (AP) - Authorities say a young black bear that caused a stir when it appeared in a Philadelphia suburb over the weekend has been euthanized after being captured.
Fred Harran, public safety director in Bensalem, told reporters Monday that the animal was “put down” because of a broken leg. He said investigators believe the animal may have been struck by a car.
The 175- to 200-pound bear was originally seen just before 9 a.m. Friday near the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bensalem, about 18 miles northeast of Philadelphia. The animal was spotted several other places, including a local park, and turned up again Sunday afternoon on the grounds of the Bucks Meadow apartment complex.
Harran said the animal was euthanized after it was found behind the former Nifty Fifty’s restaurant on Sunday night.
