TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A Tucson soldier killed from wounds in Afghanistan has been laid to rest.

The Arizona Daily Star reports (https://bit.ly/1kfIMKr) that Command Sgt. Maj. Martin Barreras was remembered Saturday in Tucson.

Doezens of mourners gathered at Christ Community Church before a burial at South Lawn Cemetery.

Victorria Barreras says her father was exceptional and wouldn’t have wanted all the attention.

U.S. Department of Defense officials say Barreras, who grew up in Tucson, died May 13 in San Antonio Military Medical Center.

They say the 49-year-old was injured earlier this month when his unit was attacked in Herat Province, Afghanistan.

Barreras’ son says his father was also instrumental in rescuing former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch in Iraq in 2003.

Military officials have not commented on the matter.
