KILLEEN, Texas (AP) - One Central Texas police force is emblematic of a profession that officials say has a high turnover rate when compared to other jobs in the state.
The Killeen police department has lost 43 officers since 2012, a number that includes several high-ranking officers such as lieutenants and captains. By comparison, the similarly sized city of Waco has lost 21 officers over that time.
The Killeen department has about 255 officers.
Killeen police spokeswoman Ofelia Miramontes tells the Killeen Daily Herald (https://bit.ly/TL2HXF ) that a factor in the turnover is that the city is home to Fort Hood, with its many military families. She says that makes Killeen a “transient community.”
Texas Workforce Solutions estimates there are about 1,650 openings in law enforcement each year in the state.
