NEW YORK (AP) - A trio of Komodo dragons has come to the Bronx Zoo - the first time the rare reptiles have been on display in New York City since 1959.

The New York Times reports (https://nyti.ms/1k54ZWz ) Saturday that sisters Rose and Ivy and brother Stubby were born in the Los Angeles Zoo before making their way east.

The last Komodo dragon at the Bronx Zoo died in 1959.

The newspaper says the 5-foot-long, 30-pound monitors can grow up to 9-feet long and weigh as much as 300 pounds.

Bronx Zoo Director Jim Breheny tells The Times the exhibit may educate people on just how intelligent and inquisitive the slithering lizards can be.

The dragons are native to Indonesia and there are only an estimated 2,500 left in the wild.
