BOURNE, Mass. (AP) - A Boston Marathon bombing survivor and his rescuer have joined hundreds of people who planted about 57,000 flags at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne to honor the country’s military veterans.
Bombing survivor Jeff Bauman and rescuer Carlos Arredondo were among volunteers who participated in Saturday’s Memorial Day tribute to soldiers killed in service of their country.
The Cape Cod cemetery’s policies did not permit flags and flag holders on graves until 2012. The first flags were planted following pressure from Paul Monti of Raynham, whose son was killed by Taliban fighters in Afghanistan while trying to save a fellow soldier in 2006. Sgt. 1st Class Jared Monti was awarded the Medal of Honor for his valor and is buried in Bourne.
Many volunteers carried long-shanked screwdrivers for “Operation Flags for Vets.”
