COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Police officers in Columbia are collecting donations to help some people beat the heat this summer.

From now through the end of August, Columbia police are collecting fans, air conditioning units and donations for their “Fan the Heat” program.

Donations can be dropped off at Columbia’s downtown police headquarters.

The program is primarily designed for senior citizens, people with health problems or disabilities and families with small children. Since “Fan the Heat” started in 1995, Columbia police say more than 7,000 people have received a fan or air conditioning unit.
