NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - A planned triathlon at Norfolk Naval Station is off because of new security requirements.

Those new security measures were put in place after a March shooting in which a civilian killed a sailor on the base.

The Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/1oXfVgr) says the new security protocols have forced the cancellation of the June 1 Breezy Point Triathlon.

Triathlon director Brian Sagedy said the volunteer-run race doesn’t have the manpower to gather the information for the checks in time.

He said entry fees will be refunded to the roughly 450 athletes who registered.
