FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said it will ask the court to dismiss a lawsuit filed by track coach Jon Drummond, calling the case “baseless.”
Drummond, a former Olympic sprinter, accuses USADA and Tyson Gay in a lawsuit filed this week of defamation by suggesting he encouraged Gay to use creams with banned substances. Drummond says he tried to throw out potentially banned supplements and accused Gay of lying to investigators to gain a lighter suspension.
Gay is the American 100-meter record holder once coached by Drummond. Gay is serving a one-year suspension for using a banned substance.
USADA said in a statement it wants the court to dismiss Drummond’s lawsuit “in favor of the well-established arbitration process.”
Drummond’s lawyer, Mark Whitburn, issued a statement, saying: “Mr. Drummond categorically denies ever having encouraged Tyson Gay, or any other athlete, to use any banned substance. Mr. Drummond has been a vocal and active proponent of clean competition throughout his career.”
