SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Police say an inmate overpowered a guard at a central Kentucky rest area bathroom then led police on a car chase before he crashed along Interstate 64.

Police say 37-year-old Fabian Valentine was able to take the correctional officer’s gun and then flee in an SUV that was parked at the rest area.

During the police chase, the vehicle Valentine was driving rammed a police cruiser and then crashed. Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue says Valentine was apprehended at the crash scene near mile marker 35 near Shelbyville. No one was hurt in the incident.

Valentine was being transported back to the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex in West Liberty when he escaped. Perdue says Valentine pointed the gun at the corrections officer before fleeing from the bathroom.
