SAGINAW, Mich. (AP) - Family members of a 17-year-old who was fatally shot a year ago during a pre-prom gathering in Saginaw came together to remember the girl before this year’s prom.

Tonquinisha McKinley’s mother Tangela Owens tells The Saginaw News (https://bit.ly/1n7X8Nh ) this “would’ve been her prom year.”

Quintasia L. Hubbert, in a salmon colored dress, has a cursive “Tonquinisha” tattoo on her left arm. She says prom this year is dedicated to her cousin.

McKinley was fatally shot May 23, 2013. Saginaw schools leaders and city police organized pre-prom gatherings in a secure environment this year. One was Thursday ahead of Saginaw High School’s prom. Another is Friday before Arthur Hill High School’s prom.

Three others were wounded in last year’s shooting. Four men are awaiting trial on second-degree murder charges.
