DALLAS (AP) - A former Texas Department of Public Safety trooper has been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty to performing illegal body cavity searches on two women last July along a Dallas-area highway.

A statement from the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office says Kelly Helleson pleaded guilty to two official oppression counts Friday in state district court. A judge sentenced her to two years of probation and fined her $1,000 for each count.

The case arose from a traffic stop for littering. No drugs or other illegal substances were found in the searches. The DPS previously settled civil claims made by the two women searched for $185,000. Helleson was subsequently fired but is appealing.
