DERBY, Vt. (AP) - A developer has filed an application to develop a Wal-Mart Supercenter in Derby.
The $16.75 million store is expected to create 260 jobs.
Jeff Davis of Burlington filed the application Thursday with the zoning administrator’s office, The Caledonian Record reported (https://bit.ly/1gWGQaf ). He wants the store to open in November 2015.
The application culminates over a decade of effort by town and regional officials to lure a new department store to the area after Ames closed in 2002.
Voters in Derby and Newport City have approved of the Wal-Mart.
Select Board Chairman Brian Smith told the newspaper that he was “absolutely thrilled” that the project is going forward.
The 160,000-square foot store near the Newport City line would offer groceries, a pharmacy and garden-outdoor center.
Davis has an agreement with Preservation Trust of Vermont and Vermont Natural Resources Council who say they will not oppose the Derby store application if Davis promises not to build other Wal-Mart stores outside of downtowns in other areas of Vermont over the next five years.
