MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - It’s shaping up to be a busy Memorial Day weekend on South Carolina’s Grand Strand.
Tourism researchers at Coastal Carolina University say that occupancy at hotels and motels could run about 90 percent Friday and Saturday nights. That’s up as much as 5 percent over last year.
Besides the first long weekend of the summer season, there are a number of events attracting people to the Myrtle Beach area this weekend, including the Atlantic Beach Bikefest and Military Appreciation Days.
AAA-Carolinas is predicting this will be the busiest Memorial Day on South Carolina highways in almost a decade. Travel is expected to be up in part because the economy is improving and because people want to get out after an unusually cold and icy winter.
