CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - A Putnam County man has been charged after the body of his infant son was found in a car’s back seat.

Media outlets report 33-year-old Robert Jeremy Smith of Hurricane was arraigned Thursday in Kanawha County Magistrate Court on a charge of child abuse resulting in death.

A criminal complaint says Smith had been caring for the 5-week-old boy since Sunday at his home. Smith indicated he went to pick up the baby but lost his grip and the child fell to the floor.

The complaint says Smith waited more than a day to call for help. Police found Smith and the baby Wednesday in the Kanawha City section of Charleston.

The charges were filed in Putnam County. Smith was being held on $500,000 bond at the Western Regional Jail.
