PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) - A well has been shut down at Pease International Tradeport after a chemical used in commercial products was found in the groundwater.

WMUR-TV reports (bit.ly/1triAPj) Thursday that the chemical is believed to be left over from a firefighting foam used in the 1970s at a former U.S. Air Force base there. Public health officials say the drinking water supply is safe and the possibility of health problems is low.

The chemical does not break down easily and officials say the levels found in one well were high enough to cause concern. It also was detected in two other wells, but at much lower levels.

State and federal agencies in cooperation with the Air Force are investigating the contaminants. The tradeport’s drinking supply will be supplemented by the Portsmouth water system.
