ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - St. Paul has reached a proposed $42,000 settlement with a man who claimed a police officer illegally searched his car.
Under the agreement pending City Council approval, the city would pay $7,500 to 25-year-old Clifton McWright of Minneapolis.
St. Paul would pay $34,500 to McWright’s attorney, Joshua Williams, to cover legal fees.
Under the settlement, the payouts are not considered an admission of liability. Williams told the St. Paul Pioneer Press (https://bit.ly/1lYozX5 ) he thought the settlement was “equitable.”
McWright was stopped in his car by a St. Paul police officer in March 2012. McWright claimed the officer ordered him out of the car, handcuffed him and searched the car without probable cause because he thought McWright might have a gun. No weapons were found in the car.
The city had argued the search was appropriate.
