HOLLAND, Mich. (AP) - A settlement totaling about $1 million has been reached between a western Michigan city and a clerk who was fired over a property tax exemption on her home.
The Holland Sentinel and The Grand Rapids Press report the agreement with Jenifer French was announced Wednesday. She will be reinstated as clerk, but will immediately resign. She’ll get about $900,000 and the city will pay $109,000 into the retirement system.
The Michigan appeals court in 2013 said a judge wrongly threw out an arbitrator’s decision that was in French’s favor. The ruling meant that she could be reinstated with back pay and benefits that were worth $90,000 a year when she was fired in 2006.
French, who was appointed city clerk in 2000, maintained that she didn’t intentionally deceive the city.
