SAN DIEGO (AP) - A dead whale that washed ashore in San Diego has been towed out to sea, where it will become food for sharks - and a bonus for scientists.
The 75-foot male - possibly a fin whale - washed up Monday at a cove near the Point Loma Wastewater Treatment Plant. The cause of death is under investigation.
U-T San Diego (https://bit.ly/1gSOXED ) says two city lifeguards swam to the carcass Wednesday to secure a towing line. A fire rescue boat then took it to a vessel from the Marine Conservation Science Institute, which towed it out to sea.
The institute plans to use the whale as bait to attract female white sharks, especially pregnant ones, so they can be tagged and their movements studied.
