NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) - Restoration work on Newport’s Cliff Walk is taking longer than expected and may keep parts of the state’s most visited tourist attraction closed until mid-July.
The Newport Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/IX5CGL ) the problem is with a section of the walk near Miramar mansion, midway between Marine Avenue and Ledge Road.
Workers are building a 200-foot-long concrete retaining wall there to prevent erosion from washing soil and rubble onto the walk.
Joseph Godino, an engineer with the state Department of Transportation says the contractor is working 10 hours, six days a week, but may need up to four weeks longer than anticipated to finish the $5 million project.
The southern section of the oceanfront walkway has been closed since Superstorm Sandy destroyed parts of it in October, 2012.
