BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - With the 2014 boating season about to launch, law enforcement officials in western New York are getting the word out on how to stay safe on the water.
Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard is holding a news conference late Thursday morning at the Erie Basin Marina on Buffalo’s Lake Erie waterfront to discuss his department’s Marine Division patrols, the summer boating season and new legislation covering boat operator certification.
A new state law that took effect this month requires all boaters ages 18 and under to obtain a Safe Boating Certificate by completing an eight-hour course.
In addition to the Erie Basin Marina, Buffalo is home to the publicly-owned Boat Harbor, the largest marina in New York state and one of the largest on the Great Lakes.
