LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Gov. Rick Snyder’s administration, lawmakers, companies and organized labor are joining together to promote safe driving in roadside construction zones.
An effort to encourage drivers to “Slow Down and Go Around” workers in Michigan’s construction zones is scheduled Thursday outside the state Capitol building. Consumers Energy says there were 11,000 construction zone and utility-related car crashes in 2012. Twenty-four of them were fatal.
The culprit often is drivers being distracted by cellphones or other things, or ignoring safety zone speed limits.
One scheduled participant in the event is Robin Creel. Her husband was struck and killed by a vehicle while working as a journeyman line worker for Consumers Energy near Bronson in 2012.
The state Department of Transportation plans to give Creel a proclamation from Snyder. She also will speak.
