GARY, Ind. (AP) - State highway crews will suspend work over Memorial Day weekend to make holiday travel easier in northwest Indiana.
The Indiana Department of Transportation says the road work moratorium will last from noon Friday until Tuesday morning.
The department says road restrictions will be removed where possible to ease traffic flow for holiday travelers. However, some restrictions will remain in place on larger projects in Gary, Whiting, Hammond, St. John, Lowell, Portage, Kouts, Walkerton and South Bend.
Among the larger restrictions: traffic will be shifted in both directions on I-94 near Portage for bridge replacements, and U.S. 31 will be restricted to one lane in each direction near the U.S. 20 bypass in South Bend for construction of new tie-ins to U.S. 31.
