MIAMI (AP) - A former Miami-Dade County public works official who oversaw thousands of roadway lights has pleaded guilty to accepting $150,000 in bribes.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office reports that 67-year-old Garfield Perry pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiring to accept bribes in connection with programs receiving federal funds and to commit extortion. He faces up to five years in prison at his July 29 sentencing.
Perry had served as roadway lighting coordinator for Miami-Dade’s public works department from 2002 to 2009. Court records say that he began accepting bribe payments from an unnamed contractor in 2006.
George Brown, who held the job after Perry, was sentenced to 30 months in prison in March for accepting more than $13,000 from the same lighting contractor. The contractor began cooperating with the FBI in 2012.
