LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - Virginia environmental officials have served a notice of violation with CSX stemming from the April 30 train derailment in Lynchburg.

The News & Advance (https://bit.ly/1jYXnEX ) reports that the Department of Environmental Quality cities regulations prohibiting the discharge of oil into state waters, lands or storm drain systems.

Federal investigators are trying to determine what caused the 17-car derailment of a CSX train carrying Bakken crude oil from North Dakota. Three of the cars plunged into the James River and one caught fire, briefly causing parts of downtown Lynchburg to be evacuated.

Nearly 30,000 gallons of the oil spilled into the James.

The DEQ letter requests that CSX respond within 10 days of the letter to discuss the matter.
