TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - The Florida Supreme Court is upholding the conviction and death sentence of a northeast Florida man who beat his parents to death with a baseball bat.
Authorities say Gregory David Larkin attacked his mother, 73-year-old Myra A. Larkin, while she was watching a movie in April 2009. He then went to the garage, where he attacked his father, 75-year-old Richard C. Larkin Jr.
The bodies were found 8 days after the murder. Larkin had gone to Mexico but returned to the country and was arrested at a nearby hotel.
Larkin represented himself during the trial and during a hearing to determine if he was mentally competent. He argued in his appeal that the court should have appointed him a lawyer during the competency hearing. The court rejected this argument.
