PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY’-fee) has nominated a top official in his administration to a judgeship on the superior court.

Chafee on Thursday announced he was nominating Richard Licht (LEECH’) as an associate justice on the court.

Licht has been Chafee’s director of administration since he took office in January 2011. He is also a former lieutenant governor and state senator.

Chafee calls him a skilled attorney who has devoted much of his career to public service.

Licht was a practicing attorney before he was appointed to the Chafee administration. He received his undergraduate and law degrees from Harvard University.

His wife, Roanne Sragow, is a district court judge in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

A Chafee spokeswoman says Licht lives in Providence and his wife lives in Massachusetts. Massachusetts judges are required to live in-state.
