DETROIT (AP) - New numbers from the Census Bureau say Detroit’s population continues to fall, despite pockets of growth in areas such as downtown and Midtown.
The population estimates released Thursday show Detroit remains the nation’s 18th most populous city, with 688,701 residents in the summer of 2013. That’s down about 10,000 from 2012. During that period, Michigan’s population rose to nearly 9.9 million.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan tells The Detroit News he’s committed to ending the decline.
The Flint Journal reports Flint’s population has dropped below 100,000 for the first time since the 1920s. The Detroit Free Press reports the Detroit enclave of Highland Park lost more population on a percentage basis than any community in Michigan.
The Grand Rapids suburb of Kentwood, meanwhile, joined the 50,000-plus population club.
