RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A surprise storm lashed parts of Virginia on Thursday with winds topping 50 mph, quarter-sized hail and a drenching rain.
The storm swept through Richmond, through south and southeastern Virginia and into northern Virginia, downing trees, shattering windows and spawning funnel clouds.
There were no reports of injuries.
Dominion Virginia Power reported more than 30,000 power outages at the height of the storm, primarily in the Richmond and Petersburg area, as well as southeast Virginia. The number had dipped to under 25,000 by 7 p.m.
The National Weather Service received reports of funnel clouds in the metropolitan Richmond area and southeast of the city as the storm moved along a corridor paralleling Interstate 64.
A tornado warning was issued for Gloucester, Southampton, Surry and Sussex counties, as well as the cities of Franklin, Suffolk and Williamsburg.
In northern Virginia, the weather service said golf-ball-sized hail fell and winds gusted more than 60 mph.
In Richmond, streets and interstates saw scattered flooding and media reports said windows were blown out of some businesses.
City police and the Virginia State Police said there were no reports of extensive damage.
