NOME, Alaska (AP) - A resolution from U.S. Rep. Don Young could spur development of a deep water Arctic port on Alaska’s western coast.

KNOM reports (https://is.gd/jJG46y) the Alaska Republican has proposed a measure that would divide about 2,500 acres of federal land on the Seward Peninsula

The Bering Straits Native Corp. would get a majority of the land, nearly 2,400 acres. What remains for the state and the Coast Guard is small, but vital for infrastructure development in the Point Clarence area.

Young says he’s not saying this will be the final spot for a port, but it could provide land in an area that has been discussed as the location.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to release recommendations for a deep water port by the end of the summer.
