NEW YORK (AP) - Officials say a Rikers Island inmate who was taken to the hospital after a fight with another inmate died hours later as he was returning to the jail.

The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/1oRfowI ) says the inmate was evaluated at a hospital around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday following the fight.

According to Correction Department officials, he was being escorted from a van back to the facility around 4:30 p.m. when he sat on the ground and became unresponsive.

The inmate’s name and cause of death weren’t immediately released.

The Correction Department has come under growing criticism recently over conditions at Rikers Island. In February a mentally ill inmate died in an overheated cell. The city has vowed to make reforms.
