NORTH MIAMI, Fla. (AP) - A special election will be set in the coming months in North Miami for voters to replace their mayor, who was suspended from office after being indicted for fraud.
City leaders said Wednesday that North Miami’s charter requires an election within 60 days of an official’s removal from office. One official told the Miami Herald (https://hrld.us/1nfR4Fg ) the city may try to get that pushed back to August.
Mayor Lucie Tondreau was suspended Tuesday by Gov. Rick Scott after she was charged in an alleged $8 million mortgage fraud conspiracy. Tondreau has pleaded not guilty and says she will be vindicated, which could allow her to regain her post.
If convicted, she and three others could get 30 years in prison.
Tondreau in June became North Miami’s first female Haitian-American mayor.
