MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - State Sen. Barry Loudermilk and former Georgia congressman Bob Barr will compete in a Republican runoff for the U.S. House seat given up by GOP Rep. Phil Gingrey.

Loudermilk of Cassville finished far ahead of five Republican opponents in the Tuesday primary for the 11th Congressional District. But he was far from winning a majority of the vote to avoid a runoff. Barr of Marietta, who’s seeking a Washington comeback, finished second.

The Republican nominee will be decided in a runoff July 22. No Democrats are running, meaning the runoff winner should get a free pass to Congress.

The district covers portions of the Republican-leaning suburbs north of Atlanta. Gingrey of Marietta gave up his House seat to run for the Senate.
