ATLANTA (AP) - A veteran state senator who lost re-election Tuesday’s primaries blames the defeat on negative campaigning and last-minute attacks.
Sen. Don Balfour of Snellville, the longest-serving Senate Republican, was acquitted last year of charges that he improperly billed the state for some travel expenses while he was in the Legislature.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported (https://bit.ly/1pcJDLT) that Balfour said voters in his district were bombarded last weekend with fliers that included the mug shot from his arrest and headlines about it.
Balfour’s opponents, former Gwinnett County Commissioner Mike Beaudreau and former Lawrenceville City Councilman P.K. Martin, both finished ahead of him. That sets up a July runoff between those two candidates for the Republican nomination.
