WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - Halifax Media Group has agreed to buy the Worcester Telegram & Gazette from Boston Globe and Boston Red Sox owner John Henry for undisclosed terms.
The companies announced the sale Wednesday. Henry had said he would sell the newspaper he acquired with the Globe last year from The New York Times Co. for $70 million.
The Telegram and Gazette reported its interim publisher James Hopson told employees there would be some staff reductions.
It’s the first Northeast purchase by Florida-based Halifax. It owns 35 Southeastern newspapers, including 16 acquired from the Times Co. in 2011 for $143 million.
Halifax CEO Michael Redding called the T&G “an excellent local newspaper with a dedicated and talented staff.”
Globe CEO Mike Sheehan said Halifax brings “the passion and commitment needed to preserve the T&G’s traditions and build for the future.”
