A 7-year-old girl was shot by a stray bullet while she was with friends at a playground at her Park Morton Apartment Complex in the Northwest area of Washington, D.C., police said.

The girl was playing alongside about a dozen other kids when shots were heard, witnesses said, NBC Washington reported. She was sent to an area hospital and is expected to be fine, the news outlet reported.

“The [kids] ran and left sneakers and flip flops behind,” a neighbor told the news station. “The adults that were still on the playground just started scooping up the little kids and just running off.”

Police found a man suffering from gunshot injuries just a few blocks down the road, at the junction of Georgia Avenue and Park Road. He had collapsed in the street and was then taken to a hospital for treatment, where he’s recovering well, NBC Washington reported.

“My neighbors and me, we can’t handle [the crime] anymore. It’s too much,” one neighbor told NBC Washington. “I mean, that’s somebody’s baby.”
