SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - State Rep. Buddy Carter of Pooler and Savannah physician Bob Johnson will meet in a Republican runoff election for a shot at filling the southeast Georgia congressional seat given up by GOP Rep. Jack Kingston.

Unofficial election returns showed Carter and Johnson were the top two finishers Tuesday in a six-way Republican primary in the 1st District, which covers southeast Georgia from the coast to the Florida line.

Democrats will also have a runoff for the Republican-leaning seat between Amy Tavio of Richmond Hill and Brian Reece of Savannah.

Runoffs will be held July 22. Kingston of Savannah stepped aside to seek Georgia’s open Senate seat.
