FAIRBANKS, Alaska (AP) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough is disputing the school board made defamatory comments when firing a superintendent.
The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner reports (https://is.gd/KSUk8S) former Superintendent Pete Lewis’ lawyers are accusing the board of acting outside its contractual agreement with Lewis. They also accused board members individually and as a whole of defaming Lewis.
The school board fired Lewis May 12, citing incompetence and negligence in investigating and retaining employees, including a high school tutor who was charged with sexual abuse of a child attending the school. Lewis is seeking arbitration.
Borough lawyers say board members never made misleading or false comments.
The borough says he’s entitled to arbitration, but if he wants more information about why he was fired, he has to take part in a pre-determination hearing.
