PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A union for some Rhode Island state workers has rejected a proposed collective bargaining agreement with the state that includes a 6 percent pay hike.
The Service Employees International Union announced the 91-64 vote on its website Monday.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee in April announced the tentative agreement with Council 94 and the Coalition of Unions. Council 94 has already approved it.
The SEIU Local 580 represents social service, administrative and technical workers.
The agreement provides for a four-year contract retroactive to July. It includes a 2 percent pay increase now, a 2 percent increase this October and again the following October.
The pay increases, the first since 2011, are not budgeted in the current fiscal year or the coming year. Chafee says the contract provides for some health care savings.
