RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty joined lawmakers at the North Carolina General Assembly in honoring his late wife.

Petty sat in the gallery Tuesday as Sen. Jerry Tillman, R-Randolph, read a statement recognizing the contributions of Lynda Petty, who died in March. She was recognized by the General Assembly for her service to her community and NASCAR.

Tillman said Lynda Petty was known as the “First Lady of NASCAR.” She served on the Randolph County Board of Education for 16 years, helped found several philanthropic organizations and served on several charitable boards throughout Randolph County.
