DECATUR, Ga. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson has won his Democratic primary showdown with DeKalb County’s former sheriff.
Johnson of Lithonia defeated ex-Sheriff Tom Brown at the polls Tuesday in metro Atlanta’s 4th Congressional District. Unofficial election returns showed Johnson had 55 percent of the vote with nearly all precincts reporting.
No Republicans are seeking Johnson’s metro-Atlanta seat, which is anchored in DeKalb County. So he’s effectively won re-election.
Brown served as DeKalb County sheriff for 13 years before turning in his badge to run against Johnson. He said the congressman hasn’t attracted enough federal spending to help the district weather economic hardships. Johnson insisted his constituents received $250 million in benefits during his time in Congress. He said Brown’s campaign was fueled by a “misplaced sense of vanity.”
