GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - Georgia’s newest congressman has defeated a Republican primary challenger in his first re-election bid.
Rep. Doug Collins of Gainesville defeated Bernie Fontaine of Suches, a retired brigadier general in the Georgia National Guard, Tuesday in the GOP primary in northeast Georgia’s 9th Congressional District. Unofficial tallies showed Collins leading by a sizeable margin.
Collins’ district covers most of northeast Georgia and was added after the state picked up a U.S. House seat from the 2010 census.
Collins will face Democrat David Vogel of Hull in the fall campaign.
