RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The Republican-led legislature’s annual effort to scale back regulations that supporters label burdensome or outdated has started in the North Carolina Senate.

A Senate committee voted Tuesday in support of more than 70 changes on topics ranging from environmental permitting to how swimming pools are built to accommodate people with disabilities. Community colleges also would get the same authority to sell beer made in distillation programs as college wine-making programs have for their product.

The legislation also eliminates a 1918 statute making it illegal to use profanity on roadways in all but two counties deemed unconstitutional and increases penalties for taking protected plants like Venus flytraps.

The GOP has approved omnibus regulatory bills routinely since taking over the General Assembly in 2011. The bill now heads to another Senate committee.
