ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A federal facility that houses research materials and government records from Alaska will close next month.

The Anchorage Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1nc03qR) the National Archives and Records Administration will close the downtown Anchorage facility on June 20.

Materials will be shipped to Seattle.

Officials say they plan to digitize the records once they reach Seattle, and have asked for help in prioritizing the 12,000 cubic feet of material to be digitized.

The government anticipates saving more than $500,000 a year with the closure.

The move was opposed by Alaska’s congressional delegation and local historians, who say moving records to Seattle will make their jobs that much more difficult.
