Morocco Brown hired by Cleveland Browns, departs as Redskins pro personnel director

Morocco Brown, who has served as the Washington Redskins’ Director of Pro Personnel for the last six years, is expected to be hired by the Cleveland Browns to a senior post in their personnel department, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported early Tuesday that Brown will become either the Browns’ assistant general manager or the director of player personnel - titles that, in most organizations, carry much of the same responsibility.

One person, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to address the matter, said Brown interviewed with Cleveland on Saturday.

Brown joined the Redskins in 2008 and has overseen the team’s talent acquisition primarily at the professional level, as well as its advance scouting, while working under general manager Bruce Allen and director of player personnel Scott Campbell.

He interviewed for the Arizona Cardinals’ general manager opening prior to last season and also interviewed to become the general manager of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers late this past winter.

The Redskins hired Doug Williams to serve in an undefined role within their personnel department in February and also hired A.J. Smith, the former general manager of the San Diego Chargers, to assist with scouting prior to last season. Of the two, Williams would be more likely to replace Brown in that role.

Brown would rejoin former Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan in Cleveland. Shanahan was named to that position in February after he was fired by the Redskins on Dec. 30 with his father, coach Mike Shanahan, following four seasons with the team.
