GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Police have arrested a 33-year-old Greenville mother who left her 3-year-old son sleeping in an unlocked, running SUV while she shopped and had the vehicle stolen.

Investigators say Edith Alvarado is charged with cruelty to children, a misdemeanor that carries up to 30 days in jail and a $200 fine if convicted.

Police say Alvarado was shopping in a bakery on Friday when her SUV was stolen with her son inside. The boy was found safe, still in his car seat, on the side of a Greenville road.

Alvarado is in the Greenville County jail awaiting a bond hearing. It wasn’t known if she had a lawyer.

Police say the man who stole the SUV faces kidnapping, grand larceny and other charges.
